  • The Poseidon Adventure (1972) US film directed by Ronald Neame, starring Gene Hackman

  • Poseidon (2006) US film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, starring Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas, and Emmy Rossum

Fear of the open ocean runs deep in two thrillers about a luxury cruise ship that overturns and begins to sink. The first, a 1972 movie starring a young(-ish) Gene Hackman, is a biblical parable, following a small group of survivors braving perils and debating amongst themselves who they can trust to make decisions. The second, from 2006, follows a similar group of survivors, but drops the allegory in favor of thrills and gruesome violence.

But which approach works best? David and Claire will investigate.

Source Material:

Paul Gallico's 1969 novel. A group of passengers on an ocean liner struggles to reach safety after the ship is capsized by a massive wave.
